A fixed partial denture (FPD), commonly known as a bridge, is a dental prosthetic used to replace one or more missing teeth. It is “fixed” because it is permanently attached to the surrounding natural teeth or dental implants, unlike removable dentures that can be taken out.
Components of a Fixed Partial Denture:
- Abutments: These are the natural teeth or dental implants on either side of the gap that serve as anchors for the bridge.
- Pontics: These are the artificial teeth that replace the missing teeth. They are attached to the abutments.
- Retainers: These are used to secure the pontics to the abutments.
